Heroes of 97

The sound of the comedown and the comeback of the year

You've seemed really happy and confident this year so why was 'Vanishing Point' such a downbeat album?
"I think that's where our heads were at, describing things that were happening. It was quite cathartic. The fact that we came through a lot of bad shit and made a great record was a big thingfor us. Everythingwe set out to do over the last year has happened. It was perfect."

Your live dates got off to a shaky start, didn't they?
"It tookawhileto settle. Itwas like starting over and we were getting together in public. We took the chance and it dinnae really work out until after the British tour."

How pissed off were you when gigs were postponed because Diana had just died?
"We'd already cancelled it once 'cause we had to sort out all sorts of shit, and then the day before the gig we were told it was off. It's like being told the day before the Cup Final that it's cancelled. Especially when it's some fucking scumbag who has nothing to do with your life."

You've been pretty vocal about the Liverpool dockers, too
"I think it's immoral what's happened to those guys. It's no' fucking right. We did a gig for the dockers - that was totally fucking angry."

How's the next album going?
"We're working all the time right now. We've got half an album's worth already. We've recorded a track called 'Insect Royalty' for the Irvine Welsh film. If you hear that, there's no resemblance to 'Vanishing Point'."
